About Tessa Carlin

I make work because I love to make beautiful, useful and useless things. I enjoy the process, the problems and then the experiments to solve them. It is through making that I have the continuous joy of learning. The work of Alexander Calder and Sophie Taeuber-Arp is an endless source of inspiration for me. Their work shows the combination of the freedom of fine art with the discipline of design that I try to reflect in my own. My objects have essential functionality at their core, whether it is the abstract function of a painting or the very real use of a vase, but equally as essential is their aesthetic beauty. I make objects for my home and the philosophy behind my making practice is timelessness. The question that I always ask in the process of making/designing is ‘could I live with this for the rest of my life?’ I endeavor always to make objects that do not go out of style, objects that do not become disposable because they cease to be fashionable.
